On September 8, 2026, Dune Technologies completed the share transfer that gives it a 50% stake in Gustech Ventures. The deal marks a deliberate step away from pure cryptocurrency mining and toward what Dune calls an “AI Token Factory” — repurposing compute and power infrastructure built for mining rigs into capacity for AI inference and training, as crypto mining’s economics grow harder to predict.
Mining margins have been squeezed from multiple directions: rising network hash rate spreads block rewards across more competitors, energy costs remain volatile, and post-halving block subsidies leave less room for error. Those pressures have pushed a wave of miners to redirect the same assets that made mining possible (i.e. cheap power contracts, large-scale data center shells, and cooling infrastructure) into AI hosting, where demand for GPU capacity has outpaced supply. Dune’s framing of the Gustech deal follows the same logic of trade exposure to a single, volatile token economy for a role supplying compute to the AI buildout.
Under the agreement, Dune now holds 50% of Gustech Ventures following the completed share transfer. Dune with it’s the operational know-how built from running mining infrastructure, says that the acquisition pairs Gustech’s facilities with its own technical and deployment expertise to manage the retrofit and build-out needed to serve AI workloads. Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Dune joins a list of mining operators that have made a similar bet over the past year:
Company | Move | Scale |
Acquired by CoreWeave; also signed standalone AI colocation contracts | $9B acquisition; separate AI hosting deal worth $10.2B over 12 years; AI revenue reached 39% of total
Signed HPC hosting contracts | $12.8B in contracted HPC revenue; AI revenue at 27% of total
15-year AI infrastructure lease at its River Bend campus | $7B
Multi-billion-dollar hosting agreement with Google-backed Fluidstack | Funded partly by $1.7B in senior secured notes
Building liquid-cooled GPU infrastructure | 200 MW under construction; AI revenue at 9% of total |
As with Dune, most of these moves are funded by selling down bitcoin holdings or raising debt against future AI hosting revenue, rather than by mining income.
The broader mining-to-AI shift has real momentum behind it: within a year of making the jump, several miners moved a meaningful share of revenue onto AI contracts, riding demand for GPU capacity that continues to outstrip supply. Dune’s stake in Gustech gives it a running start on the same path — an existing facility, power infrastructure already in place, and the technical and deployment expertise to convert capacity quickly rather than build from scratch. If Dune executes on the build-out, the “AI Token Factory” model has a clear path to becoming a durable second engine for the business: one tied to where compute demand is growing, rather than to the swings of a single crypto asset.
